Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  I had to work Thanksgiving, but luckily will be able to meet up with family later on tonight.

I know our dogs have a lot to be thankful for.  I’ve gone on an Amazon spending spree and bought them a bunch of toys.  Mainly tug toys and some “indestructible” chew toys, but also some treat toys as well.  We got a long package dropped off and when I opened it the first thing that came to mind was “gigantic dildo”.  It was actually a very long, rubber tug toy, but it is an unfortunate shade of pink that brings to mind adult sex toys.  It took me a moment to figure out what it really was.  Bad choice of color, Kong manufacturers!

The West Paw toys seem to be holding up really well so far.  I hear they are one of the best toys in the sense that they are difficult to break down.  We also bought some rope tug toys but those have to be supervised because Benny will just sit there and chew on them and shred them to pieces.

Speaking of our dogs, I was so mad at them the other night.  Jesse, Ezra and I had gone to Costco for a couple hours and we left the dogs loose in the house.  When we got home I saw a Ross tag on the carpet but figured it was a leftover from when Ezra threw a party with my Ross tags and scattered them everywhere.  Next I saw a chewed up Adidas tag, and I hadn’t sold a pair of Adidas shorts in quite some time.  I looked into the dresser where I keep some clothes to be sold but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.  A few minutes later the thought occurred to me I should check their dog area outside.  I went outside and found about five pairs of Adidas shorts strewn through our mud-packed dog area.  These were new shorts, mind you, that still had on their tags.  I was PISSED!  I picked them up and took them inside and they all had dirt smears on them, so now I have to remove the remaining tags, wash them, and then put them back up for sale as pre-owned instead of new, and that really affects the price I can get for them.  Not to mention that because they hadn’t been moving as stock I was going to take them back to the store for store credit, which I now cannot do.  So yeah, those were a loss of income.  The crazy thing is, the dogs had to have opened the dresser drawer to pull out the shorts.  Velvet said we should get those child safety locks, and I may just do that.  Bad dogs!

We cut off Ezra’s mohawk for the winter.  I’m not sure if we’ll cut it again in the spring or just leave it alone.  He has the cutest curls when his hair dries from being freshly washed, but his overnight bed head is pretty crazy.  It has this frizzled quality to it and it sticks out and this mama is lazy enough to not want to wet his hair down daily.  My own mohawk is growing out nicely but I’m not quite sure what to do with it.  It’s a bit too long to spike up so I’ve just been combing it over and calling it good.

We haven’t had a new egg from our chickens in a couple weeks, so either they are getting stolen from something or the girls are just slowing down.  Still, out of 12 hens you’d think we’d get a couple eggs a week.  Still looking to put the two non-layers on KSL to see if anyone wants them.  Two less non-producing mouths to feed.

I *think* I may have felt the baby move a week or so ago, but it could also just as easily have been a muscle twitch.  Pretty sure it was baby, but haven’t felt it again since then.  Theoretically we get to find out the gender next week, so I am excited about that.  Keeping fingers crossed the baby is not going to be shy about showing the goods.

Pregnancy brain

I think I’ve just been unobservant in life lately; there was a box of Orville Redenbacher’s fat free popcorn in my mailbox the other day and I was going to throw it away but was too lazy so it’s been chilling in my car the past couple days.

Today I thought I would bring it in to work and leave it in the breakroom for others when I noticed there was packaging tape on it. I was like, who broke into my popcorn box and then tapes it up?

I flip it over and it’s got a mailing label on it. It was from an eBay seller, one of the sets of books I bought for Ezra for that 24-books of Christmas thing I’m doing this year, reusing a box to ship them in. Thank god I procrastinate. Maybe this is what they mean by pregnancy brain.

Creeping up on Thanksgiving

I would say Halloween was a rousing success this year.  Ezra went dressed as a pirate.  First we did a Trunk-or-Treat activity at Velvet’s ward on Thursday and there were so many people there!

Dad and Dani came down that weekend, so they were there to enjoy the festivities.  The next day we brought the kids to work because our company always has games and treats and decorates.

That night we went out trick-or-treating.  Ezra was a real trooper!  He didn’t quite get the idea of going up to houses on his own, but when his cousins held his hand he was more than willing to make the trek up the lawn to get his candy reward.  He was such a tired boy that when we were finished (as was mama) and fell asleep pretty quickly that night.

We’ve been letting the puppies stay out all night.  It’s been going on for about a week or two to good results.  No accidents in the house, although they sometimes chew on inappropriate items when we leave stuff on the floor.  The other day I decided to let them roam the house while Ezra and I did some shopping.  I think we were gone for less than an hour and the house was great.  Yesterday they were alone for maybe four hours before I got home and we now have a lovely ripped/chewed spot on the carpeted stairs by the front door.  Who knows why they chose that spot to go crazy.  Also, they chewed a small hole in a corn-filled bean bag/microwave heat bag.  Which I now have to sew.

We are watching Jesse’s parents’ dog, Molly.  I am not a fan of this dog.  To her credit, she doesn’t chase the cats and I don’t think she chases our chickens, but that’s really all the good I can say about her.  She is anxious and shakes all the time, she will knock over trash cans to get the food inside, she will jump onto the table to eat food off plates, she barks a ton, and lastly, she bites.  She bit Ezra at the in-laws the other week to get the food out of his hand, and she bit me two nights ago when I was shooing her out of the kitchen.  We don’t let the dogs in the kitchen when we’re eating, so I put my hands around her waist to scootch her toward the living room and she whipped her head back and bit me!  She was latched for awhile but she didn’t draw blood.  I have a nice small bruise on my thumb now, though.  I grabbed her by the collar and put her in her crate for the rest of our dinner time.  I was pissed!  I feel kind of bad for her because she’s not trained, probably shakes because she doesn’t know what the hell is going on, and she is pretty overweight for a rat terrier so I’m thinking maybe her joints are starting to hurt her.  I tell Jesse I’m surprised her skin hasn’t split with how tight it feels.  But still, not a fan of hers.

We still have 12 chickens, though we’re either going to cull or otherwise get rid of two hens.  I don’t think they laid the entire summer, they are just wasting resources.  On the one hand, we should cull them and just given them to the dogs, but I don’t want to deal with removing feathers and I don’t want to give them to the dogs with the feathers on lest they start looking at the rest of the hens as meals on wheels.  I’m thinking just to put an add in the local classifieds and see if we can get any takers.

The pregnancy is going well.  I had an appointment a couple weeks ago and was able to hear the heartbeat again.  Today I am 15 weeks along.  At my last appointment she said I could potentially find out the gender at four months instead of five.  She said she didn’t like their regular ultrasound imaging (or something) so she brought in a woman who has a better machine?  I didn’t quite understand the whole story.  But anyway, even though this ultrasound would be just for “entertainment” and I still get my regular one at five months, my doctor said this woman had never been wrong with her estimates.  That will be kind of exciting, finding out early, although I’ll probably still be leaning on my five-month ultrasound as the confirmation.  Of course, this all supposes the baby is in the correct position to see anything at all.  Fingers crossed!

At my next appointment they also do a blood draw to look for chromosomal abnormalities, like down syndrome.  I’m not sure why this happens this late in the game because while I suppose you could still terminate at that point, to me it’s a baby already at that stage.  It’s not like when it’s just a ball of cells, you’d have to actually deliver by that point.  I guess it’d be helpful because then you could prepare yourself if you decided to continue with the pregnancy.  Hopefully it’ll be a clean draw like with Ezra and we won’t have to worry about anything.

Speaking of, I did a Google search because I wanted to see an image of a 15-week fetus in utero (you can really only get so much from those cartoon drawings that show what’s going on inside) and the results were awful.  I did get the typical drawings, but they also had a bunch of what I can only guess were aborted fetuses, totally not what I was looking for!  Those images were so sad and graphic.  I guess I’ll just stick to the drawings.

I have been fermenting again, creating kombucha and water kefir with good results.  As I’m always looking for more natural remedies, I also made a honey/ginger/lemon concoction.  It’s not a ferment, I just added all the items together and placed it in the fridge, but it’s supposed to be very strong in healing/protecting against colds.  Ezra and I sampled some a couple days ago.  Ez loved it and wanted more and I liked it, too, but there was a bitterness left on the back of the tongue I can only imagine came from the lemon rind.  If you all hear of any other remedies, let me know!
