Busy October

Mom and Jim came earlier in the month to celebrate all the October birthdays.  That includes Mom, Jim, Jesse, Kate, and myself.  We have the month packed!  Jesse was only able to be around for one night because he had hunting scheduled already (he got skunked unfortunately) so we celebrated without him.  Mom, Velvet and I spent a nice day pampering ourselves.  We got pedicures and shopped all day long.

I bought a dress I think I’m going to wear to the company Christmas party and Velvet found a gorgeous lace-covered one as well.  I also bought a pair of jeans!  I haven’t been able to wear jeans since before Leo was born!  I even washed them and they still fit, so I am pretty excited about that.  I’m keeping the tags on the dress until it gets closer to the party, though, just to make sure it still fits.  You never know, another month a half and it may be too loose.

Recently Velvet and two of her kids, Heather and her kids, and me with my two went to Gardner Village to see the witches.  Every year they decorate for the season and it’s fun to walk around.  They don’t tend to change it up year to year so I didn’t go last year.  This time Ezra wasn’t scared of the witches and instead wanted his photo taken with them.  There was an adorable alpaca hanging around as well, it was super soft.

Speaking of Ezra, that kid is so smart!  He likes us to quiz him with math problems (what’s 10+10, what’s 15-8, that kind of thing) and he is always correct!  I asked him if that’s what they were teaching in his preschool and he says he doesn’t learn math there.  When I asked where he learned it, he said from Minecraft!  I’d believe that, too.  He has to count up to a certain amount to build things in that game and as much as I find it to be pretty boring, he will play it for hours.  I guess if he’s learning that kind of thing, and creativity too, I can’t complain.

This past week was the week of movies!  We saw three movies in a week.  Wednesday it was On the Edge of Seventeen, then on Thursday we saw The Space Between Us, and finally on Friday it was The Accountant.  All three were pretty well done, with the latter being the best, I thought.  We had dinner at Wingers before the show on Friday and Jesse had to try some of their hotter sauces.


Yep, he was sweating by the end.

Velvet and I each bought a pair of season tickets to the new Eccles theatre downtown and the tickets finally came in the mail!  Starting in November, we will be seeing live plays.  We decided we are going to live it up and do it right by dressing to the nines and having a nice meal beforehand.  I told Jesse he has to dress up as well; I foresee a trip to the department store to get a couple suits.  It’s always good to have a suit ready to go, right?

Halloween is upon us!  I’ve had the house decorated for a little over a month.  I received another Halloween vinyl decal in the mail but it was so late in the month when I got it that I’ll just keep it for next year.  We have our company Halloween party tomorrow but I’m not sure if the boys will be coming in.  I’ve told their sitter about it and invited her to bring her kids as well but it’s kind of up in the air at this point.  Tomorrow night we’ll head over to Velvet’s and do trick or treat with her girls around there neighborhood.  They did their church’s Trunk or Treat last night but Ezra was with his other cousins so he missed out.  I haven’t told him about the company part in case he doesn’t get to come, didn’t want to get him all excited for nothing.

Probably half a year ago or more I bought a violin and a banjo.  The plan was to teach myself using a mix of For Dummies books and YouTube videos.  I messed around with them for a couple days and then promptly forgot about them.  Within the last couple weeks I decided I should maybe get serious on learning so I’ve been watching some videos and last night took out the violin and learned about the proper way to hold the bow and where to get the best sound.  I have an electric tuner and was using that but then the E string peg slipped and and suddenly the E was a low G.  I played around with it a bit and decided that the string wasn’t strung correctly (this was before I watched a YT video explaining how easily pegs slipped out) and though I was very cross I finally got the string in correctly and them almost immediately broke the string while tightening and tuning.  Dammit.

I hopped onto Amazon and bought a few packets of extra strings, but that was pretty much the end of my violin lessons last night.  I tuned the rest of the strings as best I could.  The bridge popped out at one point but I was able to wedge it back in fairly easily.  Violins are delicate, man!  I was so nervous I was going to break it.  Granted, it’s a crappy $60 violin, but still.  I figure once I get better I can spend more money on a better instrument.  In the meantime I suppose I’ll turn my signs to the banjo.

My only problem is trying to find the time to practice.  It has to be while the boys are asleep or they will want to play on whatever it is I have in front of me.  But then I cannot be too loud because I don’t want to wake them.  And evening is pretty much the only time I have with Jesse and I don’t know that he wants to hear me play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” 20 times in a row….  It’s a quandary, for sure.



Keto log #3

10.18.16 – I’m still ketoing on but have had a couple of what you might call “cheat” days.  I didn’t go all out and binge or anything, but I had a Café Rio salad with rice and beans one day, and then wings with BBQ sauce a few days later.  Surprisingly, the rice and beans didn’t do much to take me out of ketosis according to my urine strips, but the BBQ wing night basically took me to the very edge.  I’ve been hungrier than usual lately and I’m sure it’s because my body is getting back into ketosis.

I’ve gone up a few pound from my low of 252, right now I’m hanging around 254.  I’ve decided it’d be a good idea to start logging food again, which I hate.  It’s such a pain in the ass to first try to find the food in the vast log of food (I use My Fitness Pal) and then to measure it all out.  And then if you create your own recipes you have to estimate what the measurements are and what the serving sizes should be.  Generally I just dump stuff together and it all turns out, so this is a time-consuming process.  It looks like my carbs are always great but I’m going over on calories, so that’s probably why weight loss has stalled.  That being said, I may still be losing inches.  I took measurements when I started and just again today.

So I have lost inches of course, but I now need to see if I keep losing inches while staying at the same weight, because apparently that is a thing.  I’m probably going to go the rest of the month not too concerned about calories and then measure again in a half month or so.  On the one hand if I either stay the same or gain weight then I should have been counting calories and wasted half a month/month but on the other hand if I’m still losing inches and the occasional pound or two, I’ll probably stay on “lazy” keto and not worry about things too much.

I usually do intermittent fasting (IF) on a 16/8 schedule, meaning I don’t eat for 16 hours and then have a eight-hour window to eat my food but these last couple days it’s been tricky as I’ve felt ravenous upon waking.  I know once I become more adapted it’ll be easier and I may even go full on fasting some days.

10.29.16 – Things have been going pretty well lately.  I was stalled for a couple weeks at around 251 and I was very confused by it.  I thought going IF would help but I kind of wondered if that wasn’t the problem after all.  I was doing around 20/4 and I felt ok but decided to start eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner again and what do you know, today I am 247!  I don’t know if it’s coincidence or what since I don’t really track my macros, but I do feel like I’m eating more per day when I do the three meals and have been losing small amounts daily over the past five days.  And I do like the pleasure of eating multiple times a day instead of just one or two times.

Jesse has lost about 10 lbs I think it is, mostly from his belly, he looks so trim!  Not that he really needs to lose weight as tall and lanky as he is, but he looks very fit these days.

I purchased my first new pair of jeans the other day, one size smaller!  I was pretty happy about that.  The weird thing is, even at 27 lbs gone, I don’t *feel* lighter when I move around.  I mean, when I roll over in bed at night I’m no longer hoisting a huge belly around, but when I’m walking I don’t feel lighter.  I suspect that will probably come later, if at all.  Most likely I’ll not really notice because it happens over a long period of time and is so gradual that it’s not shocking to the system.

Keto log #2

9.15.16 – I broke this morning, I weighed myself.  I logged in at 261, so with my starting total of 274, that’s 13 lbs in 19 days.  Not too shabby, eh?  At first I was bummed it wasn’t more, but then I thought that if a healthy rate of loss is 2 lbs a week, then I’m ahead of the game and it hasn’t even been a month yet.  So I’ll wait again until the end of the month but I think I’m on the right track.

9.17.16 – We had steak and broccoli last night and it was fantastic.  Jesse really knows how to grill well.  I made cauliflower ham chowder earlier in the day for lunch and it was way tasty, and then I baked off some bacon to store in the fridge for just “whenever” moments.

I went to Costco yesterday and spent way too much money but it was on tasty items so I don’t feel bad about it (see bacon reference above).

Tonight I’m going to test out a recipe for eggroll filling, but I’ll tweak it a bit.  I’m going to add the remaining half spaghetti squash in the mix, I think it will be a nice addition.  I’ll probably take photos and let you know, though.

9.18.16 – Well, the eggroll filling turned out fairly well.  I didn’t end up using any cabbage, just the spaghetti squash for the main veggie, and I used a bit too much soy sauce so it was slightly saltier than it needed to be.  I like it well enough and Jesse had three helpings, so that was encouraging.  Though, to be fair he hadn’t eaten anything all day.

Yesterday I was feeling a bit out of it.  I’d had cauli ham chowder for breakfast and I ate that quite soon after I got into work whereas I’d normally wait until my noon break, and then at my first break I had the steak and broccoli leftovers I was going to have for lunch, and then for lunch I had the few strips of bacon I was planning to eat for my last break.  My day was all kinds of off and I felt out of sorts.  Not exactly shaky but kind of…unfulfilled I guess I’d call it.  Even after I ate dinner I still felt wrong, so I put some pork belly in the oven and made some real whipped cream and ate most of the cream while the pork belly was cooking.  And you know what?  I felt loads better.  So, I hadn’t gotten enough fat all day and once I got some fat in me I felt normal again.

Today I brought the pork belly, cauli ham chowder, and some salami with cream cheese.  We’re having meatballs and broccoli for dinner tonight.

9.19.16 – Dinner last night was kind of blah to me, though Jesse liked it.  I don’t know why but I decided to get on the scale last night before bed and of course it had crept up to 263.  I didn’t let it bother me because it was the end of the day and it’s shark week besides so I know I’m retaining water.  I weighed again this morning and voila, 259!  Let’s keep this train moving!

9.23.16 – So apparently once I cheat I just cannot stop.  I’ve weighed a couple more times and this morning I was at 256!  It’s exciting and yet I just cannot wish that it were more.  Don’t get me wrong, that’s 18 lbs in less than a month, and if I am able to keep this pace it’ll be 60 lbs off in no time but I still wish I was stunning immediately, you know?  Well, it took years to put it on so I have awhile to take it off.  *sigh*

I made some cheesecake-like fat bombs last night and also some pumpkin cheesecake fluff.

I did not feel great when I went to bed and I think it’s just so much dairy doesn’t agree with me always.  But they were both pretty tasty  I have been using stevia but I think I may also purchase a couple bottles of sugar-free Torani syrups.  The stupid thing is I had like 4-5 bottles about a year ago and then got rid of them because we figured that real sugar was healthier than the artificial stuff.  I still think that natural sugar is probably best, but the artificial stuff doesn’t spike my insulin so it sounds like on the rare occasion we make desserts I will be using that.

9.24.16 – I tried my hand at parmesan chips the other day and sadly I wasn’t a fan.


They weren’t bad, just not that great.  I think I made them too thick.  I’m trying to find a good chip replacement and a cracker replacement for dips.  We made Fathead Pizza the other day and it turned out pretty well.


I’ve heard you can use the crust for other applications like crackers and danishes and a bunch of other stuff so I may branch out with that recipe.

We made a quiche last week and it would have been tasty except it had kind of a soapy flavor to it.


I think the silicone cake pan I used was perhaps not rinsed well enough or something.  I used silicone instead of our normal metal pans because it was a crustless quiche and I didn’t want it to stick.  I’ve also heard of people using sausage for the crust and that could be interesting.

10.1.16 – Well, I failed spectacularly at not weighing for the month of September.  As it got closer to October I was weighing myself pretty much daily.  I went back up to 257 for a few days which I know is normal, weight fluctuates.  When I weighed myself this morning, I was at 255!  19 pounds gone so far.

I am having this weird thing, though, where my urine is brown sometimes.  I mean, like, BROWN.  I usually chug more water and it clears up and looks normal again but some people online are suggesting it could be Rhabdomyolysis which is a fairly serious condition.  However, I don’t meet any of the criteria so I don’t think that’s what it is.  I will definitely keep an eye on things, however.  Nothing hurts on me or feels out of place.  I’m not more tired than usual or have memory fog.  I’m not cold all the time.  It seems to me that when this happens I end up losing some weight, so that could be a correlation.  In the meantime I will keep calm and keto on!
